My house is about fourteen years old. That means that a few things had to be done. Because of the proximity of the ocean humidity is high and that affects the woodwork of the balustrades and the
outside wooden staircase. The great advantage of living in this complex is the presence of a handyman who, if he doesn’t do the work himself, calls in all kinds of helpers. He has many contacts. He is pushed by everyone (which is sometimes necessary), but I’m in no hurry, which means I (mostly) patiently wait until he has time. First of all, the planks and railings were renewed on the staircase and some outer walls got a new coat of paint. All the houses have the same colour paint, so I did not have to think about it.
Once you start to refurbish you notice more and more what could be improved. Suddenly I thought the pavement of the terrace wasn’t looking very appealing, and I decided to go for a wooden deck after consultation with friends Jaco and Mies.
That they can work quickly in this country was proven by the company which I had selected. They could start right away and did a perfect job.
The terrace seemed twice as big and beautiful.
On the left hand side you see a path; that also had to change, and the terrace at the other side of the house looked ugly because different bricks and tiles were used. Also, that side was tackled.
Louise sent me a picture of a solution to the path. The path was to be removed, and a low wall to be built around the garden. I showed it to a construction company which works with sand stone. Their website looked professional and the work showed seemed of high quality. Maybe I did not clearly explain what I wanted, or maybe the builder had not been paying attention, but when I came home one day, it looked like the great Chinese Wall in the making.
The planning of this company left much to be desired, but the wall became a reality after three weeks instead of the four days which were promised and the garden was beautifully adapted by my garden service lady.
In front of my study’s window stood a huge tree, which took away all the light and was not healthy. The latter was the reason for me to have the tree removed without any guilt. As a result, I get a sea of sunlight in my office now.
As you can see I have been busy this winter, haha …
